WORLD CANCER DAY : PHYSIOTHERAPISTS ROLE IN A CANCER PATIENT

PHYSIOTHERAPY IN ONCOLOGY

Physiotherapists have a preventative, educative and supportive role in the management of a cancer patient. Patients who have undergone a mastectomy experience: limited range of motion (ROM),weakness, pain, scarring, lymphoedema (swelling of the upper limb), scapular winging,  postural changes and balance impairments. The degree of difficulty patients encounter and recovery time varies with the extent of the disease, surgical procedure, age and coexisting problems.

Early intervention is essential for efficient recovery. Physiotherapy serves to regain normal use of the affected limb through posture correction; exercises, lymphatic drainage massage, scar mobilization, pain relieving modalities, and education about
lymphoedema and its minimisation. Consult us for additional information.
